Africa at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics
- Of the 55 African countries that participated in the Olympics, only 13 won at las a medal at Tokyo 2020. Seven (7) of them won at least a gold medal while two (2) countries (Kenya and Uganda) won more than a gold medal.
- East African Countries produce the most medals for Africa. This is led by Kenya in Athletics, the sport that produced most medals for African countries at the Olympics. Other sports were swimming, taekwondo, wrestling, boxing and modern pentathlon.
Tokyo 2020 vs Rio 2016
- Compared to the 2016 Olympics, there were less medals won at the 2020 Olympics. At Rio 2016, a total of 45 medals were won by African countries which was 8 medals better than Tokyo 2020.
- At both events, East African countries produced most medals for Africa. This was led by Kenya. South Africa was the only Southern African country that produced all 10 medals from the region in 2016.
- Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco produced a total of 9 medals at Rio 2016. In 2020, Algeria was the only North African country that did not appear on the medals table.
