Seeking Alternatives – Public & Private Universities in Nigeria

  • When Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, there was an agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government on May 25, 1999.
  • ASUU went on strike on September 13, 1999 because of the failure of the Federal Government to implement the May 25, 1999 agreement.
  • By the end of the year, there were 3 private universities in Nigeria. Added to the grievances of ASUU was the allegation by the government to commercialize universities. Today, there are more private universities in Nigeria than federal or state government-owned universities.
  • In Africa, Nigeria has the most people that travel to foreign countries for higher education.
