Following the choice of study by Africans and  we checked what academic discipline made up the University system and the gender construct for these courses

 

  • This analysis displays the total number of students in different academic fields across Nigerian universities from 100 level to 600 level (depending on the duration of the course).
  • Less than 5% of the total number of students are registered in Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Medicine and Environmental Sciences – 0.2%, 0.7%, 1.3%, 2.4% and 3.5% respectively.
  • The Sciences, Social Sciences, Administration and Management and Education have the greatest number of students with 17%, 16%, 14% and 13% respectively of the total population.
  • Sharp differences are obvious in academic disciplines such as Engineering & Technology (89% male vs 11% female), Environmental Sciences (78% male vs 22% female), Computing (76% male vs 24% female) and Veterinary Medicine (70% male vs 30% female).
  • A sharp difference in interest is also observed in students studying in the Basic Medical & health Sciences field with a 67:33 female-male ratio.
