Top Destinations for Nigerian Migrants

  • United States of America (USA) and United Kingdom (UK) are top destinations for Nigerian migrants.
  • Of the top 10 destinations, USA and UK make up 44% while the African countries on the list make up 42%.
  • There are 4 countries in the top ten that have English language, (Nigeria’s lingua franca) as its official language.

Note: United Nation’s Migration Agency defines a migrant as

“any person who is moving or has moved across an international border or within a State away from his/her habitual place of residence, regardless of (1) the person’s legal status; (2) whether the movement is voluntary or involuntary; (3) what the causes for the movement are; or (4) what the length of the stay is”.

 

How Many Nigerian Migrants Make up Total Immigrants?

 

  • Of the total immigrants for the countries listed in the table above, Nigerian migrants make up 45% of Niger’s.
  • Nigeria also has an immigrant stock in other countries such as Cameroon (29%),  Benin (22%), Ghana (17%),  Togo (12%) among others.
  • From the above, there are more Nigerians who migrate to countries within West Africa than any other part of the world.
